When the docks come out on Otter Tail Lake, most of the summer map closes down. What stays open sits close together at the east end, around the City of Ottertail and Highway 78. A supper club, a breakfast counter, a golf resort with an indoor water park and a resort that rents fish houses there all post schedules that run past Labor Day. Most of the boat-up summer list doesn't post one at all.
The off-season covers more of the year than summer does. Minnesota DNR records put the lake's typical ice-out in mid-April. Since the City of Ottertail calendar starts the holiday season on the first Saturday in December, the year-round places carry the lake for about five months.
The Highway 78 Cluster
The Otter Supper Club & Lodge says it is "open year-round, 7 days a week," and gives its location as the east end of Otter Tail Lake, off Minnesota Highway 78 between County Highway 1 and Highway 108 East. The building includes a restaurant, bar, liquor store and hotel. The Otter's own site lists four golf courses nearby: Lakeside, Thumper, Balmoral and Oakwood. Its October 2026 events calendar shows Friday meat raffles at 6 p.m. and video horse races on Saturdays.
Breakfast is down the street. The Otter's site sends morning diners to Marge's Diner at 102 W. Main St., which posts hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and catering. It is closed Monday through Wednesday.
Thumper Pond Resort is listed by Explore Minnesota as open year-round, including winter. It has an on-site restaurant and lounge, and its golf course runs April through October, weather permitting. The Willy T's dining page posts a fall kitchen schedule that changes through the week.
Barky's Resort completes the cluster. It describes itself as "the only resort on Otter Tail Lake within walking distance to restaurants, a C-store, and a bait shop." Barky's runs its winter season from September through April, with stay-and-play packages for ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Summer's Map, by Contrast
Much of Otter Tail Lake's summer social life is built for a short season. The Zorbaz Otter Tail page at 36108 County Highway 72 announces its season with "Openz May 1zt." It lists summer hours and says nothing about winter.
One summer addition on the west side may change that over time. In July, Perham Focus reported that Holly's Resort at 36294 Augustana Drive in Battle Lake had opened Sven's Pub & Lounge to the public. Richard Hollingsworth founded the resort in 1941 as a fishing camp and named it after his nickname, Holly. It now passes to a third generation: Chase Jensen, grandson of Barb and Steve Jensen. The pub is named after a family dog. It serves wine, coffee drinks, pizza and a few beers, including ales from Outstate Brewery in Fergus Falls.
Jensen told Perham Focus that the pub is meant for people who live here as much as for resort guests. "We have this beautiful space on a beautiful lake, and locals should be able to experience it and enjoy it too," he said. When it opened, the pub's hours were noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. That was a summer schedule, so check with the resort about winter hours.
How Long the Quiet Season Lasts
DNR's LakeFinder ice page for Otter Tail Lake has 51 ice-out observations from 1982 through 2026. The median ice-out date is April 16. The earliest was March 16, 2024, and the latest was May 13, 2013.
The recent record shows how much one spring can differ from the next:
- 2022: May 6
- 2023: May 5
- 2024: March 16
- 2025: April 17
- 2026: April 17
The 2023 and 2024 ice-outs came seven weeks apart. A late spring can keep the lake frozen into May, and that whole stretch falls to the year-round places along Highway 78.
The freeze-up record is much thinner. DNR lists only five ice-in observations for Otter Tail Lake: three in late November, one on December 1, 2007, and one on January 4, 2024. Five data points can't set a reliable calendar. They do show that some winters arrive well after Thanksgiving.
Fish Houses on the Ice
Once the lake freezes, the east end has a second line of business out on the ice. Barky's ice-fishing page lists fish-house rentals at $350 per day. It says the resort plows the ice road and drills the holes, and its rental units are Ice Castle models from 2023 and 2024. Vacationland Resort also rents ice houses on Otter Tail Lake, with private access and a plowed road to each house. Neither page puts a date on its 2026–27 season, so ask each resort about opening dates and availability once ice forms.
Two Saturdays on the Calendar
The off-season has two set dates, and both are on Saturdays.
Saturday, December 5, 2026: OtterDazzle. The City of Ottertail calendar lists the event for December 5. Otter Tail Lakes Country's OtterDazzle listing describes a vendor and craft fair with Santa at the Ottertail Community Center. One line on that page says December 6, so confirm the date before you go.
Saturday, February 6, 2027: Otter Tail Lake Polar Plunge. The Plunge MN event page places the plunge at the Otter Tail Lake Sportsman's Public Water Access. The listed start is noon, subject to change, and the fundraising goal is $110,000. An Otter Tail County release on the 2024 plunge named the hosts as Otter Tail Lakes Country Association, the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office and Special Olympics Minnesota. That release said the money raised supported Special Olympics Minnesota's year-round athlete training and services.
Ice-out has come anywhere from mid-March to mid-May, so these two dates are the fixed points in the quiet season.
